If the Lord had not been near

1 If the Lord had not been near,
at our side and quick to hear,
who would then have calmed our fear?
Let us praise the Lord!

2 If the Lord had not come in,
strong to save from deadly sin,
who would then have helped us win?
Let us praise the Lord!

3 If the Lord who set us free
did not hear us, could not see,
who would then our saviour be?
Let us praise the Lord!

4 Swift and certain to our aid
comes the one by whom are made
starry heavens, woodland glade.
Let us praise the Lord!
