1 Child of gladness, child of sorrow,
crib today but cross tomorrow;
holy Child who comes to borrow
peasant robe and stable bare:

2 Child as all our children tender,
prince removed from heaven's splendour:
wealth and glory you surrender
all our bitter pain to share.

3 Child in Bethlehem appearing,
neither hurt nor hatred fearing:
you we worship, God revering,
Jesus, Saviour, hear our prayer.
