1 When life is painful, where we stand,
we hide the hurt and anguish;
behind the mask of self-control
our spirits fail and languish.

2 We hesitate to trust you, Lord,
refuse your gifts and graces;
we don't step out in faith with you
but stay in our safe places.

3 Within the pain your love breaks through
and leads us to repentance.
Your judgment came on Jesus Christ,
though we deserve the sentence.

4 We praise you, Lord, with thankful hearts;
your plans are not frustrated:
by grace and love we shall become
the people you created.
