When life is painful, where we stand,
we hide the hurt and anguish;
behind the mask of self-control
our spirits fail and languish.

We hesitate to trust you, Lord,
refuse your gifts and graces;
we don't step out in faith with you
but stay in our safe places.

Within the pain your love breaks through
and leads us to repentance.
Your judgment came on Jesus Christ,
though we deserve the sentence.

We praise you, Lord, with thankful hearts;
your plans are not frustrated:
by grace and love we shall become
the people you created.
